About Vitamin D
Deficiency is Common
Vitamin D deficiency is more common than one would think. Food sources---liver, fatty fish and fortified liquid milk products---are no longer consumed in the quantities they once were. Also our ability to synthesize vitamin D in our skin from UVB rays is reduced by sunscreen products, air pollution, medications, darker skin pigmentation, older age and a poor state of health. Population studies have suggested that societies with low blood levels of vitamin D have a higher incidence of multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, breast and colorectal cancers. In addition, vitamin D deficiency leads to softening of the bones (rickets) in children and osteomalacia in adults.
Common conditions that increase one’s vitamin D requirements:
- Living in a cold climate
- Dark pigmented skin
- Frequent infections
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Vegan diet
- Osteopenia and osteoporosis
- History of breast or colorectal cancer
Health Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society both recommend 1,000 i.u. of vitamin D daily. However, this recommendation is currently under review, since many health practitioners already recommend higher daily amounts during fall, winter and spring.
